Land Art - Richard.... i am catching up with you.....ha ha!

Hey everyone... inspired by Richard Shilling i was at the beach with a friend today and felt the urge to have another go at some landart.... the wind was incredibly strong and it was a struggle to get the stones to remain upright - wobbling all the way through as they did.

But we took photos throughout (and a little video, may post another day) and luckily i got right to the last level and shouted "quick take a picture"! Barely had the photo been taken and the stack toppled.... but i was delighted with the results and learnt a lot from the exercise.

I have learnt not only does one choose carefully the horizontals... but also the little supporting stones between the layers... i did not really source the stones well enough... but for a first attempt... i am ecstatic!

tell me what you think.... watch out richard.... i am on your case.... 8)

and here is the video...

Hi Jane,
I am fascinated by land art. Isn't it wild how the elements can challenge you. I was painting outside on my canvas the other day and a bug flew into the paint. Then he walked around making his own little signature marks. He helped me to create and that was fine. Guess that wind spirit was playing with you!
Neat that you have a photographer documenting your stuff. Gives you more time to play and create. They sure have some nice rocks where you live. And the beach isn't too shabby either. Have you ever done anything with shells or made imprints in the sand?

hi! i knew where you lived.....!!! the penalty for being "famous"! spooky isnt it you are right... mostly one has no idea where anyone is based. I made the little stack on Climping Beach which is not far from Littlehampton. I love it there cos the beach is so huge and its really quite quiet even in the summer... so not too many people distractions. I live further in land about 12 miles north of Brighton.

Sussex eh? I somehow thought you were in the States for some reason, the video made me think that. That's the thing with the internet, you could be on the other side of the world or just down the road. Whereabouts were you making that stack? I've spent lots of time on beaches in Sussex, used to climb on the chalk cliffs at Saltdean when I used to live in Tunbridge Wells. I love living in Lancashire but I am from Kent originally. Although now you are going to tell me there is a sussex in the US/Aus/NZ!

hi richard... i guess you are right.. you just have to go for it and learn as you go.... so dont worry about the trade secrets... i will learn as i go! i was rediculously pleased with my experiment.. so thanks for the inspiration...

as for the wind force! i will keep going until i get a force 10 in sussex in mid january then... ! not sure my cameraman will still be so keen to venture out then! As you could see... he got sort of bored waiting for the mini stack to be completed hence the glance out to sea!!

thanks for the encouragement... i will keep going... it was great fun!

Tee hee! That's tickled me! Windy? You call that windy? That's not a proper gale. You can't call yourself a rock balancer until you have done one in a hurricane!

You really don't want me to give away my trade secrets do you? That would take all the fun out of it! The whole point is finding out for yourself and you wouldn't want me to spoil it for you would you? ;-)

I love the video. I love how the first few fall off and you glare at the camera looking cross and your cameraman glances out to sea instead.

Anyway what advice do you need from me? You were having a whole load of fun, what more is there to say?

Keep at it Jane I've really enjoyed seeing what you've done.

oh barb..what a wonderful observation and a lovely thing to say... thank you! its true... like life.... balance is a difficult and impossible thing, usually, to achieve... thank you xx

Pathetic it is not. The joy in the process of doing it shines through in your words ... a work of art that was accepted as temporary and barely held its balance long enough to be photographed ... like life ...

Okay, I have been playing with rocks all summer, and now I see this, I will be playing with them some more! My rock wall is sort of a "land art" project. My DH calls it the "Great Wall of Carol", lol. But I like the little monument. Here, the sheepherders make these, and you will see them up on the point of a small hill or mountain point. They use them as markers for direction and location. Mine will be for aesthetic reasons only... lol.
