new box of colours arrived today

My early Xmas present (to myself) of a beautiful box of Winsor & Newton oil colours arrived to day. How long will I be able to keep my fingers off it, I wonder? I have been using their alkyds and their student winton range of oils, as well as the water mixables, but these are the top of the range paints. They look so good in their wooden box. I must have thought myself worth it! At the moment, I plan to use them for the final glazes on paintings to see how they feel and to see if they are m… Continue

Oils are my new favourite paint!

Oils are enjoyable for me to use recently. Mostly I am messing around with slapping paint on and seeing if an image appears. I think all this bravado with the brush/knife marks will transfer to my realistic painting when I get around to doing that again... kind of loosening it up. On the other hand, I may just like all this abstract work so much I may never go back to 'realism'. I laugh out loud and smile and generally enjoy the abstract-whimsy style so much when I am in the midst of it. For rea… Continue

Trying the marshmallow cookie

Yesterday I was working on the sleepy lizard and decided to try marshmallow thinking. I thought of floating marshmallows on hot chocolate. So I did a small watercolour of the lizard (my chocolate) and floated my OP on top (marshmallows). First time I've used OP over waterco… Continue

Got the OPs out today

Today, I got my boxes of oil pastels out...for a change. I like OPs as they give me license to do 'mad' things with colour. Very free-ing medium for me. I did this portrait of a lizard as part of a project on another forum. Its called 'Lizard dreaming of being a chameleon'… Continue

faces project

The four faces project gave me the push to try a series of self-portraits. I did my first one of me and my dog in watercolors. It was fun to use watercolours for a portrait. Not sure if I will continue with watercolours for all my self portraits...I might...or I may try various different mediums for the different portraits. I am rather intrigued by Frida Kahlo's self-portaits and I've ordered a book on her work from the library. Maybe I'll do a self portrait with monkeys or lemurs. I have a ph… Continue

Busy day

I had a busy day...took photos at the park...it was around 9am and there was a hazy effect from the morning sun which was rather special. I did a quick sketch with my marker pens. Then I did some watercolour painting in the afternoon when I came home. I am still stuck on the dog theme...I painted a bassett hound which was for another forum I visit. I won't get onto my own thing until I get these old projects finished. I still have the adventure of finding 'my own subject'. Continue

Is your dog god? Or just human?? (No offense meant)

I saw this title Is your dog god or just human on one of my rss feeds from the Daily Telegraph today. Made me laugh. My dog definitely thinks he is a god!! He's not as lowly as a human. Humans are there to pander to his every need...especially to rub his little tummy! Here's the link to the article if you want to read it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2008/05/10/bodot110.xml Continue

Summer's here

Spent yesterday and today in the park, sketching in watercolours. It was so warm and sunny; I had such a great time. The sketches are on my blog site. I added coachcreativespace to my communities list on my blog. My blog is fairly new...well, it has been started several times and deleted...hopefully up and running now. http://june-walker.blogspot.com/ Last night I also did some doodling but I haven't taken photos of the doodles yet. I got a new laptop recently and now my old scanner won't wo… Continue

Funny thing?

Its funny for me anyway...I decided to do art for myself and not for commissions for the next year. (Mostly I do pets or wild animals on commission). The very first pictures I've done in my new 'me' time are...pets and animals. What does that say about me? Anyway, the good thing about the 'my art' phase is the lack of stress of getting likenesses that people will like and meeting deadlines. I love the freedom. See you later! Continue

Hi all

Hi all, I've been absent for ages it seems. I've been busy with commissioned art (animals; pets) but now I am taking time out to create my own art, so I hope to be around a bit more often. How are you all doing? Continue

Monkey tails

A new exhibit has opened at my local zoo. Its called 'monkey tails' and so I went for a look today. It was previously the greenhouse for exotic plants. Well it still is, but now it has squirrel monkeys, tamarins and Goeldi monkeys in there as well.

Its marvellous for these little monkeys. Plenty of room to swing around on the tall plants/tree. And plenty for them to see and do. One squirrel monkey was watching the huge goldfish in the pond when I went in today. The gold fish were bigge

Sept- late summer holidays

I am late taking my summer hols this year. I am off to Scotland for a few weeks, visiting relatives. Hopefully taking snapshots and doing some sketching...if there is time in between socializing.

I was busy writing my August newsletter for my website. I had problems with sending it out, or at least my host site did. For instance, I never received a copy of it myself, but a friend told me she got hers.

Hopefully, there will be lots more to write about next month.

8 out of 10

I feel quite good because I have reached number 8 in my 10 landscapes project.

I want to get the 10 done before I go on holiday in september. I am working from my old photos of views near the Union canal in central Scotland. I will be going up there for a holiday next month and it will be rather fun to take new photos of the places, and to do a little on the spot sketching.

Cat painting

I have been working on a small oil painting of my sister's cat, on and off, for the past week. New thing for me was to use 'neutrals' in my colour scheme for this painting. I am more used to using high intensity pure colour hues. I think it turned out quite well and I will give it to her when I visit her next month (in Scotland). Continue

Oil painting now

I have lots of tiny graphite and pen sketches, doodles, your might call them. I have been looking for a way to render them in colour. Nothing seemed to fit them. Finally, I did one in oils.

I have worked on it for a few weeks as it has taken ages for the oils to dry. I finished it, more or less, yesterday. I may put more glazes on...but I doubt that. Rather, I'd like to get on to do new ones. I will put it in my photos to view. Since its my first one in this style/subject matter, I exp

Day 13- paint and photography

I have 5 minutes to write this blog before I get cut off.

Today, I went to the park with toby, my dog, and took some photos of the flower gardens there, but I haven't downloaded them from the camera yet. When I do I'll put a couple in my photos, just to show that although I live in the city in an industrial area, we have a great park to go to and make-believe we are in the country!

I came home and did a layer on an oil painting I am working on- no photos of it yet. I'll wait til

Day 12 done. Phew!

I managed to do an OP illustration for my poem 'The coot's chick' today. Its slightly more realistic than my others but still the same materials and it illustrates the poem so I'm fairly happy with it for now.

It was a case of plodding on today. I wasn't 'in the mood' when I started but drawing got me into the mood by the end of it. I was thinking of the advice: don't wait for the 'mood' to create; just do the work at the appointed time and see what happens.

I'm glad that workin

Poetry day-11

Yesterday, I had a bit of a change and was into reading and writing bits of poetry. Its the first time in ages I've turned back to poems...Fuelled by working on my illustrations for my book of poems. I'm calling my illustrated book 'Cosmic crocus' as a working title. That may change. It contains nature poems, mainly UK animals and plants, but I have a few from NZ scenery which I may include in the collection. I'm not sure yet.

I went to the library and borrowed a copy
