My Creative Work Space

Hi Chris, I think this is a distinction between two types of creativity that many of us make, I know I do. There's the "brain" creativity of coming up with ideas, writing and so on, and the "hands"…

Yes I've had Macs for about 7 years, wouldn't go back to a PC. Though some of the new little netbook ones are cute if you need to be very portable. My Mac is my creative studio.

Oh that is a good point about no editing Barb! I think it has more weight too because you're actually making physical indentations and marks on a page, you're making a new tangible document, whereas a digital document is just all ones and zeros and…

Brave New Frontiers In Being Creative

However creative you are in your chosen fields of creativity, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut, or feel like you’re a one person production line just churning out the same old things.

There’s a fine line between being creative in terms of how much you produce in volume, and being creative by producing new, original stuff.

Flow is of course very important in creating, and I would suggest it’s far better to keep yourself moving and sustain momentum by creating every day, than only creating… Continue

Why Setting Creative Goals Isn’t As Scary As It Seems

For many of us who create, the mention of phrases like “goal setting” makes us groan in dread, or even dive behind the nearest sofa. It all sounds so formal, so organised, so restrictive. We’re creative people, after all, how can we be expected to be tied down and boxed in with such inflexible concepts?!

But for all its apparent structure and logic, goal setting works in a way that is not entirely explainable. You could say it was a little magical, almost. Plus it’s nowhere near as scary as you… Continue

Creativity and The Delicate Balance of Expectation

Whether you know it or not, every time you come to create, you carry with you a whole set of expectations about what you’ll create and how you'll create it. These expectations can be very positive and motivate you to create at your best. But it’s a delicate balance.

More often, your expectations about creating can be a burden and limit you before you’ve even begun, and this can be true with both under expecation and over expectation.

Let’s look at these two types of expectation more closely.… Continue

Photography, Meditation, and Travels With Kate

Last weekend I went out to the woods with my camera. I usually go out walking most weekends and haven’t been for a few weeks. I soon realised how much I missed it.

Walking in itself is a wonderful, therapeutic experience for me, as is being in nature. I’m a country boy at heart, I grew up climbing trees and playing in fields and tumbling over hay bales, both at home and on the farms where my granddad and uncle (his son) worked. So my natural place is amongst grass and earth and twigs and leaves… Continue

How To Be Creative When You Think You’ve Forgotten How To Be Creative

Each of us have a huge well of creativity inside of us, just waiting to be drawn from, so the most wonderful ideas, visions, and creative projects can flourish into life.

As a Creativity Coach, this is one of my most fundamental beliefs. If I didn’t think you had an infinite source of creativity within you, I wouldn’t be able to do anything to help you nurture and encourage it.

But of course, sometimes it doesn’t feel like we have such abundant inner creativity. It doesn’t feel quite such a hu… Continue

Hi Dan, Just (finally) read your article on creativity and selfishness. Wow - you've have addressed this issue SO well – I've really struggled with that. I particularly appreciated what you wrote about "Your own good feeling and happiness naturally radiates." Now I get what people have finally been trying to tell me. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!

Hi Dan! Many thanks for leaving your comment on my painted lady. Yours was the first one, so I was greatly relieved to hear that you found the image powerful (and that it wasn't all in my own head!). You are an inspiration...happy day to you!

My repurposing efforts tend toward the practical. Example: A really old ironing board from the days when they were made of wood that I found at the Goodwill store. I cleaned it up a bit, left the original green paint on the legs, fixed the warped top and sealed it. The board now functions as a catch-all table in the entrance way. Okay, that's not creative, but I had so much fun doing it and I love the reactions of visitors! Thank you for wonderful site.

Dan, I got your e-mail request to send cards to the 18-year-old boy, Garrett, who is entering hospice. I was deeply touched by his story. I wrote a haiku and included it in my card. I also created a collage to go with the haiku. I'm dedicating my creating today--in my 30 days of Creating-- to Garrett. Thanks for letting us know how to do one small thing to brighten a sick young man's day.
