Learning To Shun The Shoulds

Most of the time I create exactly what and how I want to, revelling in the freedom and opportunities for experimentation that creative approach brings. Occasionally though, I find my thoughts around creating stumble up against what I think I “should” be creating. When I say “stumble”, I actually mean “smash headlong into a seventeen foot thick concrete wall with the force of a rocket fuelled juggernaut”. Maybe you can relate. So let’s talk about [...]

Cast Out Every Map And Clutch A Compass To Your Heart

In a recent conversation in our tribe, I was asked if I had any plan or pattern to how I photograph, such as which camera and film combination to use when and where. My first response was that I have no plan whatsoever. I don’t have a carefully pre-plotted timetable of the next 12 months, indicating which camera to take out when, and where, and which film to load in it. I don’t have set [...]

24 Lost Photographs (Experience Trumps Results)

Recently I shot a roll of 24 photographs. Rewinding the film, I discovered it hadn’t moved past the first frame. None of the photographs I’d carefully composed had been captured. At least not by the camera. In my mind, each had been captured before I pressed the shutter release button. And because of this, those 24 photographs aren’t lost, because I had that experiencing of making them. Experience trumps results. True in this example, and [...]

Losing Count Of Creativity

Recently I talked about my attempt at 1000 consecutive days of yoga falling short at 902 days, and how this reminded me of my fallibility, and freed my occasional obsession with numbers and counting. Giving it further thought, there’s more behind counting I wanted to explore and share. When we create – when we’re truly fully immersed in that experiencing of pouring every fibre of ourselves out on to that page, that canvas, that microphone, [...]

Ten Percent Everything

What if, today, you gave away all but ten percent of your art supplies, tools and materials? What if by honing down to just this ten percent, your creative mind was suddenly able to breathe in the glorious, wide open space where the other ninety percent of “stuff” once was? In addition, what if this radical reduction in overwhelming options, allowed your creativity and artistry to come alive and get focused for the first time [...]

Ahh, Dan, it was my pleasure!...such passion for decay! There must be many more photos left for you to create! England is filled with such treasures...ancient, old, abandoned beauty...and wow, you sure know how to transform these places into places others, might just walk by w/o a glance

Exactly what is the point of having a camera if  it can't be used- where is the fun in that! I have always liked that quote from William Morris and our house is named Kelmscott in  Morris's honor.

Wow Dan 500 cameras that sure puts our modest camera collections in perspective!! Noticed the seller was careful to say that not all of the cameras were in working order make s me wonder how many would actually work ....
