A wanderer's hearth

Kikentai Ichi

Kikentai Ichi is a kendo principle. Simply put it means "spirit, sword, and body as one" and the philosophy is of bringing our will, our abilities, and our actions into accord. In my personal path I've chosen to pursue art in the footsteps of the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi who learned as much from carpenters building homes and farmers in their fields as he did from any training hall he passed in his wanderings, if not more.

I look after the Sketchbook and 3D art groups but try my very best to dabble in all angles of creativity. What I seek to learn from one form can easily apply and enhance another where all creativity is cross training for itself.

Thanks Julia. Truth be told the doodles are rolling right along- I decided to sketch a little because I felt stuck in my oil painting. A return to basics did the trick! It is winter there right? I was wondering if that is why you felt 'autum' in t...

Jules, this is just wonderful, and I'm really loving the strong negative spaces between the branches and leaves-you have a great eye and strong drawing skills-if it takes doodles and ya get this kind of result, I'm gonna start doodling again! I c...

Thanks Ben. I will have more coming- as I mentioned, sometimes it just feels good to put the brush down and get my hands dirty with charcoal. I got my oils back out after having had a run with fabrics- but somehow I felt a little stuck in the oil ...

Way to go, Mary! You've captured the spirit and energy of this place so well. Beware the 4B, he's a charmer. I feel the same way about the 6B. Once I had a taste of what it could do...there was no going back.

Wonderfully done, Jules! I always look forward to your artwork. Great textures and an excellent sense of depth/space. Can't wait to see more if you have them!

I always learn from everything you post, Jules. I still have a girl-crush. I'm inspired to find some mid-tone paper now and play.

Hum. I think it is time to stop hiding these things from yourself. I would love to see some of the drawings you found!

More Clay

So last week in sculpture class we got the head figured out and this week we started working on the features such as hair and eyes. By the break an hour or so in it was slowly starting to look like something.

He then came around, table by table, to instruct us on how to work in the eyes. We made… Continue

Playing In the Clay

A few people seemed curious about the work we were doing in my sculpture class, so I thought I'd post some of the quick pics I got with my phone's camera while at class for those interested. :)

We're on class two of about four or six. We're working in clay and building up the forms of our near life-sized busts one chunk of gum wad bit of clay at a time. We had to take pictures of our head from seven different angles for reference before we began. The teacher then started us out with a basic fra… Continue

A Little About the Rurouni

Well for starters what does "rurouni" (pronounced "roo-roh-nee" from Japanese) even mean? It translates roughly into "wandering samurai," which I felt was sort of apt given my history.

I grew up in the prairies of Saskatchewan beneath far stretching, blue skies and amid oceans of golden wheat. I was raised in a Catholic family, but not under the guidance of the usual parish priest. Our particular little town was tended to by an order of Benedictine monks and so was raised with a differen… Continue

Hi Ben,
I love Ansel Adams as I am a photographer, but also noticed on your other site you loved Leonardi Di Vinci, he was able to explore all facets of who he was (kind of what I'm doing these days). I have always felt a personal connection to the Renaissance Period anyway, it seemed such a time of change.Your bird in the hands is dynamic. I love painting birds and this one looks so sweet yet protected in those wonderfully big strong hands. Great contrast.
Looking forward to getting to know you at CCS and welcoming your many talents.

Hi Ben,
I was just looking at your sketches and reading your blogs and the story of your life so far. Must be great working as a graphic designer! I think your hand sketch with the bird is excellent, and I am also wondering about the girl with the candles, is she from a Santa Lucia celebration?

G'day Ben, I just had to drop by and see your sketches-certainly not doodles.
I see a practiced hand at work here, with a wonderful eye for design, and a lovely sensitivity for the medium, which is I think pencil of varying HB's...great to see your use of construction lines in the hands( my late artist dad would have approved!)

I really love the cupping of the hands, and the fine geometry of the first one, the second one is very sensitively handled, lovely shadow shapes and negative space is used so well...thanks so much for sharing :-)

Welcome aboard the good ship 'Spacers'...

Hi Ben and welcome to CCS! Read a few things on your blog and enjoyed them all :) You've got a great way with words. I also like Dore and have a few of his books of Illustrations for inspiration. We've got a doodling group and writers group you may also be interested in. Don't be shy about jumping into the discussions, and asking if you need help with anything :)

Welcome to CCS Ben!
Ansel Adams,Gustav Dore and M.C. Escher are among my favorites too.
Fiona is correct about all the groups- they are all different- yet have one thing in common -they are all full of inspiration and encouragment no matter what the topic of the group is. Maybe I will see you around
