thanks for that Jane, i can so relate to Hercules, sometimes I feel a Herculean-strength when faced with "mountains" of bureaucrasy, modern-world-computer-farce-like situations, etc, etc....

the Pillars of Hercules are not that interesting really.... its the "idea" of Pillars that sparked me off.... but this is what it is....
According to some Roman sources, while on his way to the island of Erytheia Hercules had to cross the mountain that was once Atlas. Instead of climbing the great mountain, Hercules used his superhuman strength to smash through it. By doing so, he connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and formed the Strait of Gibraltar. So the Pillars arethe phrase that was applied in to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. One Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar another a North African peak and the other much disputed but could be Jebel Musa in Morocco.

So i am not thinking of it in literal sense - but applied..... 8) x

oh how i wish Francesca, one day! I started out cutting out some leaf shapes from magazines in various autumn colours (inspired by a blog DJ posted a while ago). Then I got bored cutting out tiny leaf shapes in various autumn colours, so I painted over the lot with gold paint. I really liked the words from Shakespeare so I wrote them on, before the paint was dry...again just pure impatience on my part....and so on...I needed some daffodils and I had a pen sketch that I'd saved from 2004 (!) so I cut it up, re-formed it and coloured in the blue with an oil pastel. I'd been planning to use colours I don't normally use .. in this case yellow & brown, hence the fabric texture. It was quite thereaputic (sp?) as the wet yellow leaves remind me of bereavement.

Hi Angie,

it has been a while! So I gather you're off to Greece?
This work looks beautiful and full of spring life, how did you start working on it?

hi Wend, Jane, studying in Greece sounds like THE studying experience!!

I'll have to look up Pillars of Hercules, don't know anything about that one.

wow ang - love it.... i dont know much about the greeks and the romans really.. but interestingly i was introduced to the Pillars of Hercules at the weekend which set me off on a mini project (not sure i will post here) using that idea and transferring it to thinking "what are MY Pillars of Hercules" - in that the core strengths i have/need/desire to fulfil my life.... bit of a challenging thing that - but its set me off reading more about the romans / greeks - very wise people! x

Ahhh...THERE it is! I was wondering if we'd be able to get a closer look at your creation. I was right...it's VERY cool :) In college I studied abroad in Greece and we saw unearthed treasures of old. One piece is called the "Phaistos Disk" and your image reminds me of it. Love the textures and words around the edges :)

there's a bit of "merging" going on here with my 2 October projects: Colour & Ancient Myths....I was thinking about a colour that I don't normally use "yellow"...and one thing led to another...

Small collage done for my Ancient Myths Project in collage group. Coloured paper/tissue paper/gold paint/felt tip drawing. Words: Shakespeare: "O Proserpina! For the flowers now that frighted thou let'st fall from Dis's waggon! Daffodils, that come before the swallow dares, and take the winds of March with beauty". (The Winter's Tale).

Proserpina was the Roman counterpart of Persephone. ....some of the lilies she carried fell as she was taken away by the God of the Underworld & they turned into golden yellow (asphodels or daffodils). It said that the spirits of the dead delight in these flowers. I'm probably getting the Greek/Roman bits a mixed up here...
