" All characters, dates and places are fictional and any resemblance to any person, living or dead is truly co-incidental - kaly"

Rebecca and Tom had been in love for almost 10 years. They started living together for the last 6 years. She had known him more than she knew about herself. She loved all his qualities except one - Being foolishly adventurous.

He was too fond of adventures. She knew that this will put him into lot of trouble. She warned him all the time.

One day he came up with a strange and weird idea of robbing someone's home for fun. Her face grew red with anger. She wanted to beat him up, but he was too strong for that. They had a big fight that night and did not speak to each other for a week. When they got back, he still wanted to do it.

That night after a long discussion, he finally persuaded her into his idea- though he had to promise her that he would not plan on doing it again, else she would leave him for good. Tom was glad. The thought of going into some one's home and stealing things excited him very much.

Rebecca still could not believe that she bought into his idea. He decided on a date- 16th of September, 10 days from that day. It would be a Wednesday, middle of the week. He thought it would be perfect.

He had long back decided on secretly entering a place far away from where they lived. The building was Magenta towers, about 1 km from where his best friend Robert lived. He checked out the place again and the apartment where a middle aged couple lived.

The couple, Bill and Jenny had no kids. They both worked in a local hospital and would travel together all the time. They would leave early in the morning and never returned till late at night.

The day finally arrived and Tom was very excited. He also convinced Rebecca to join him. She was too confused to deny and accepted his proposal knowing well that, this would be the last time, if they ever survive.

The plan was to tie a rope around the waist, drop from the top, pretending to be a window cleaner and enter the house from the outside Balcony. He had done more dangerous things than this. She was new to all this.

To his surprise, it was raining heavily on the day, and no one was seen around. It was 2:30 in the afternoon. They succeeded in entering Bill and Jenny's home. He carried a small bag to put the articles. The house was fully decorated and contained lot of furniture, articles and very costly items. Tom was not sure, what to pick. On the table, he saw a beautiful golden ring. He liked it. He tried it and it was perfect.

It was Bill's wedding ring and Bill had a habit of removing his ring and cleaning the dirt on the finger. This time around, he forgot to put his ring back.

Tom wanted to keep it, but Rebecca said "No". She was sure it was a wedding ring and lot of good emotions attached. Any way she argued, it was his thought of entering the house and stealing for the purpose of fun and not to make money out of it. This time around, he could not convince her and had to keep the ring back.

They left the home, after stealing some petty items excepting for a costly sun glasses. It was a success and Tom was happy. They left the home, the same way they entered, to make sure, they did not leave the ropes hanging.

That evening, when Bill and Jenny returned from work, they found something looked different. The position of most of the items changed. They realised their habit of keeping open the door to the balcony and some one entered. They immediately called the cops and the cops started on a hunt. With the help of a 4 year old kid, who was watching out of the window that morning, cops traced Rebecca and Tom's place.

During all these incidents, Jenny started feeling guilty of calling the cops. She knew too well that the thieves were not bad, else they would not have left all the costly items. More over, they did not take the wedding ring, which was in a conspicuous place.

Tom saw cops and was excited for a minute, but his excitement grew into fear in no time. He knew for sure, they left a trail. He was not a professional in this. When Rebecca came from inside, she was stoned.

The sun glasses were lying on the table, in front of everyone. As Bill was about to identify his glasses, Jenny shouted that she was not feeling well and wanted to go back immediately. She did not give Bill any chance to talk. The Cops had to follow them back.

Once they were all gone, Rebecca gave a big slap on Tom's face and he did not defend. 10 more slaps and then she started crying with palms covering her face. He pulled her close, hugged her and then kissed her. Both Tom and Rebecca were pretty sure that the couple identified them as thieves, but due to some reasons, they dint wanted to press charges.

It was a lesson well learnt for Tom and he promised, he would never, ever do foolish things.

An intriguing moral tale Kaly... Makes me think about the kind of things we find exciting and dangerous, and the risks we take to pursue those...

and the things we let happen in order to please someone else!

I had a boyfriend when I was about fifteen who convinced me to rob a "head" shop ... a place that sold black lights, posters, and all kinds of "hippy" stuff. He broke a louvered window with a sling shot, while sitting in the car parked on the street. Then I ran to the window, boosted myself in, grabbed some stuff, and ran back to the car and he took off. We were questioned by the police the next day ... his license plate taken down by a neighbor who heard the window breaking, and saw me running (in my WHITE pants, for cryin' out loud ... not a very sneaky bandit) I was scared to death I was going to spend the rest of my life in jail. This guy's dad had been a captain in the police force though ... he knew the police officer, and talked his way out of it ... though I'm sure they knew it was us, they couldn't prove anything ... was it worth the risk? NO! I've paid for everything I've ever wanted since!

I thought the characterization of Rebecca was very good, how she went along even though she knew they might get caught, and didn't really want to go. Good job, Kaly!
