I just got some books from the library about low-fat and Diabetic diets and recipes. If I find any of them helpful I'll post it here. Do any of you have any favorite books, cookbooks, exercise videos, even music that you like to work out to? Or inspiring movies? If so, post them here!

Can anyone recommend an exercise video/CD? I met my new doctor last week and he says I need to get on an exercise program for cardio/vascular/pulmonary health. Not that there is anything wrong yet, but as a preventative and to get me healthier.

I found a bunch of exercise videos on www.amazon.com under Movies, Music, and Games, then Movies and TV, when you get to that page down the left hand column look under Fitness & Yoga. People rate them with stars. But I would rather here from this group before I buy one. You might want to check it out anyway.

Thanks Anne. I'll check them out. But, as you say, would rather hear from the group first.

I got a warm-up dvd from the pulmonary rehab at the hospital where I did my rehab class. It is a good way to start off your exercise routine. I do treadmill and 3 other machines, thne a cooldown...

Thanks Lin. What is the title of the DVD. Can you get it in the store, or just from the hospital?

I'd like to know if anyone has the book on the MUFA - monounsaturated fats- diet that Prevention has out. Can't remember the title off hand. Would like their opinion of it.

My husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 6 years, and a book that was recommended to us was "The New Glucose Revolution" by Jennie Brand-Miller and Kay Foster-Powell.

In error, I picked up a book by the same authors that was called "The New Glucose Revolution: Life Plan". It was probably the best mistake I have ever made.

As the result of following one of the menu plans and using the recipes in this book, together with an exercise plan, my husband lost 40 kilograms in 6 months and was told by the specialist that his diabetes as cured! After some adjustments to both exercise and food intake he has now maintained his desired weight for over 5 years – he did become a little gaunt from what I think was excessive/obsessive exercise and food limitations, so we have relaxed both of these a little.

This book is incredibly easy to read, has great explanations of, and information about, food, as well as recipes and four menu plans – For Everybody; For Biggerbodies; For Busybodies; and For Kidsbodies - all their spelling.

We followed the Biggerbodies Menu Plan.

Amazon has a later edition, but the TOC is almost exactly the same.

From a personal perspective, I can't recommend this book highly enough

Did you lose weight too!? Men apparently have an easier time of it because of hormones and muscle mass. I did lose weight on oatmeal and chicken though following the principles of low glycemic food. Only pound a month though :( Well, something is definitely better than nothing!

I love this commercial for what is probably a bogus product but the theoretical foundation is I think true. It's two cartoon characters and she says, me and my husband went on a diet. This is what happened to him (and the cartoon husband shrinks to a stringbean). This is what happened to me: the cartoon wife only looks like a slightly smaller beach ball -- though her bosom is gone! LOL! That commercial is art because it's so true and something no one talks about!

Hannah, I did lose weight, but not as much as my husband - just under 10 kilograms (about 20 pounds) for me in about 4 months. I was, however, in no way as active, or committed, as him when it came to the exercise. He went from 135 kgs down to 95, I went from 70 down to 61.

I have to admit that I also stray a bit eating-wise. Things such as not liking to eat breakfast, and so on. I also felt that I was eating so much - much more than I would usually eat, so it felt quite strange.

I only want to lose 7-10 kilograms or so at the moment, and feel that my biggest problem is fatigue amongst other things. I am feeling constantly tired, and have no desire to get out and exercise. Over the past few years I have been treated for depression (three times) fitted in around under-active thyroid, extremely low testosterone, and one or two other diagnoses. I certainly don't feel that I have been depressed at any time other than when the doctor changed the medication and I gained 7 kilograms in 10 weeks - I was certainly depressed then, but that passed after that particular medication was stopped.

Sorry for the waffling!

20 pounds in four months is fantastic! It would literally take me two years!

It's true I eat a lot more than usual when on a diet.

I'll check it out, Trish.

Eating Well is my new favorite website for recipes. Found this today:

a 12-week diet plan for weight loss.

They also have nice collections of healthy recipes...I like where they redo comfort food and make it healthier.
