Well, since no one is talking on my Musicians group I thought I'd chime in here. I loved you picked Cocteau Twins ;) It kills me that most of the real Greats are not very popular (David Bowie notwithstanding) -- and that includes a lot, and I mean a lot, of unknowns. You hear them when you go to a small club as a social occasion, not particularly for the music; when they play for ten dollars at a summer outdoor beer garden you stop by in cause they have a good deal on clams; when you run into them on YouTube as a student in a video about learning to sing; in the New York City subways -- sometimes some girl just letting loose with her friends while they're on their way out; on streets allover the world, I'm sure; someone's accountant uncle at a wedding -- it makes you realize that most of the time we don't hear them at all. And it's not just singers -- my sister's nanny is a creative dynamo. She draws like a dream, she makes high fashion clothes out of socks for the kids' dolls, she gives the kids a new hairdo every day. And the projects my niece brings home that her teachers put together out of cups and soda bottles are incredible.

But getting back to the music, all my heroes have only one thing in common: they are all completely different from each other, and they are all unique -- no one else sounds like them. It bugs me that I can't sound like them, like any of them. Singing is incredible in that regard. It is very difficult to sound like someone else -- though of course some people have that talent they call impersonation. It is really a god-given gift, and despite what voice teachers say, it cannot be developed much, no matter how much work you put into it. This brings me down.

I was just thinking that "making your own music" is a way to love music. I'm famous for humming when I'm not even aware of it. And I love to sing! Not just in the choir, but with the car radio, the stereo, I love to sing!

Oldies are so much fun to sing along with, but I also love to make harmony with "old standards." My favorites would be The Beatles (duh!), The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Andy Williams (yes, I date myself), and Tony Bennett. There are many others, but these stand out. Just today, I harmonized along with Elvis in my car to "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You."

What are your favorite songs to sing along with, or what tunes do you find yourself humming when you don't even realize you're humming?

How To Find Your Natural Writing Style

Finding your own unique voice in writing is not something that can simply happen overnight.

When we’re born, we don’t pop out of our mother’s womb conversing fluently in 3 different languages. It takes time to discover how to communicate, and even when we’ve achieved a competent grasp our native language, it’s still a lifelong journey of finding new nuances, learning new words and honing the way we communicate so we can understand – and are understood – more clearly.

So your writing is a natural extension of this. Even when you have that competency in your mother tongue, as a writer you can then go on to develop an original and distinctive writing style. Here are 5 tips to make this a rewarding journey:
