We all have negative voices in our heads sometimes, telling us we're useless or a failure or can't do something...

So what are your positive experiences in dealing with your inner critic? What techniques do you have for keeping those negative thoughts in check?

What do you call yours? And what does it look and sound like?

Let's get our inner critics out of shadows and into the light!

They're very inspiring. I haven't spent much time composing music lately, but if aliens visited and wanted to know how to write pop songs I'd recommend The Beach Boys, ABBA, Michael Jackson (up to Bad), Prince (in the 80s), Pet Shop Boys (in the 80s), Madonna (mostly in the 80s), Prodigy. All can be considered essential to the curriculum of any pop music student : )

Gerrit, you might want to check out our music group here on CCS - Music Lovers. You can join and start a comment about some of your musical heroes and see what other people have posted there...

Wish I had know from the start that there was a music group in here! I guess it took my friend Gerrit to join CCS for me to find out. I am a bit slow...

Alfredo there are now 32 different groups on CCS, no-one can keep up with all of them! Not even Malinda!

Hope you enjoy the Music Lovers group...

Well, surely Malinda? ;-)

Funny one, Wild Cherry! Malinda is only human, too ... ha ha!

Alfredo, I apologize for not pointing you to Music Lovers and I'm glad your friend Gerrit helped you out in that regard!

This is so true, Gerrit - WE HAVE A CHOICE, each and every one of us. It takes practice, though, once we are aware of that, and some things work better for some people. I am still struggling with learning about the inner critic and letting it go. I liked the image of a serpent chasing its tail ... it allows me to visualize it and step out of the middle! Let it do as it wishes :)

I often refer to a story I read somewhere. I do not remember where, but when I do I will come back and add that information.

A woman was having a nightmare. She was being chased by a fire-breathing dragon. She ran and ran. She had just about managed to escape when she tripped and fell to the ground. The fire breathing dragon- with it's smoking nostrils and big red eyes -pounced on her, pinning her shoulders to the ground. She cried out "What are you going to do to me?' A quizzical expression crossed the dragons face, he stood up and scratching his head he responded "I don't know lady. It's your dream."

My inner critic is this dragon. It is entirely up to me what kind of power I give it.

Ah. Yes. The committee. I have a close friend who was also calls hers the committee. One day she fired the chairman, and appointed one the bus driver who could tune out the rest of the committee. That way even though they were still there making noise they were no longer in charge. Seemed to work for her.
