Taking Dan's advice, I've decided to assign a humorous character to my inner critic. I haven't got time to make a graphic image of him at the moment but here's the low-down on his character:

My inner critic is an Ebeneezer Scrouge type of guy so I'll call him Eb. He's really more crow than man and he's always dressed in a fusty black. He has one of those high Victorian desks so that he can look down on everyone over the top of his pince-nez (but especially me!) and a huge, old-fashioned, leather-bound ledger in which he scratches endlessly with his quill pen.

In his ledger, Eb keeps a very one-sided set of records: He records every negative thing anyone has ever said about my creative work. He has a column for positive input but he never records anything there because he always comes up with an excuse as to why any positive remarks are invalid!

Being a scrouge, he hates to see me playing and having fun with my art and he tut-tuts at any money I spend on nice shiny materials. "Waste, waste, waste!" he mutters, shaking his feathery black head. He especially hates my box of pastels: "Kiddies crayons!" he calls them. "You can't make real art with those!" he scolds, waving a curved claw at my face...

Ok, you get the picture! Why not add a portrait of your nasty inner critic - visual, written or otherwise recorded - and add to the Goul's Gallery? Perhaps if we put them all together they'll be too busy trying to out-critic each other to bother us any more ;-)

One of these days maybe I'll catch up financially and technologically ... I just crank up the stereo (and some of my customers have awesome CD collections, too ;)

an ipod is a new thing for me, Barbara. Usually. I am the last person to get anything new technologically and financially. it's only because my twin son and daughter bought me a mini ipod last mother's day that I have one. hey, i was still using an old walkman. :)

My daughters bought an ipod for me last mother's day, too! They thought I would load up all of my favorite music, but what I really use it the most for are podcasts! (You can even put Dan's podcast on it :)

jean,
i'm ashamed to say I dunno what "pod casts are," so I wouldn't know how to download them. :(
Me too, I'm a podcast fanatic! Perhaps we should have a thread on the resource page for good ones?

I do put my belly dance music on when I do the housework...that way I can practice at the same time ;-)
Don't be ashamed, Joanna! I'm 45, and there are actually many much younger folks who don't know what podcasts are (I'm actually ahead of a lot of teens and folks in their 20's ad 30's with this one!).

Podcasts are basically audio shows that can be listened to on the computer and downloaded onto your ipod. If your ipod is an Apple, there should be a direct link to available podcasts when you hook up your ipod. I only subscribe to free ones (because there are so many to chose from!), though I'm sure that there are ome that require a fee.

The categories are endless! I subscribe to some creativity podcasts, some meditation/relaxation ones, one that teaches me Spanish, a story teller podcast...they are so much fun! If you can't find it on your Apple set up page, just do a google for podcasts - in any category that interests you. Let me know how it goes!!!

How much does a 30 gb ipod nano go for? I'm seeing used ones on sale at Craig's List for about $135 ... is that good?
Barb, the best way to compare is to go to the official Mac site and see what price they are charging for new ones with similar spec. http://store.apple.com/us
I love your Bertha collage, Joanna! No wonder she didn't want you cutting up pictures out of magazines ;-) If you don't want to put her on the wall, why not put her on the outside of the door/screen of your creative space, that way she stays firmly out of the way and you get to thumb your nose at her as you go in ;-)

I like your idea of putting her on my door of my creative space. I like it a lot, especially the part about snubbing my nose at her as I go in. You gotta admit she has some character, tho. Can I add you as a friend?

Absolutely :-)
