I don't think it's independent so much as what you're saying about "being where you need to be." It's about the environment matching what you need, what you're in tune with at the moment. So if I'm angry, rock or industrial music, and dancing to it, especially, will let it out, and make me feel extremely peaceful. The last thing I want to do is listen to new age froth. It's why people love sad songs and horror movies. It's called catharsis and it's one of the oldest artistic principles. It's also true that if I'm confused or lethargic, calming meditative music or a comedy can change my mood, but I think you have to be at a place where you're ready to make that move, you're done with it -- so it's still matching what you need.

Yep ... "whatever blows your dress up!"
... as someone I know is fond of saying :)

Hey! I haven't even joined this conversation yet, and here you go forcing me to take part! In addition to "whatever blows your skirt" I like to say, "whatever creases your trousers!"

The way you've talked about this Hannah, it's like you need a companion to ride with you for a little while, someone that understands and relates, then that gives you comfort or momentum to make the move off in a different direction...

Very apt for me today. I am having problems with noisey neghbours. I used to get so angry when they started up. It almost eat me up alive. Now when they start, I grab the dog's lead and go off to the park to calm down. I also have ear phones so that if I can't go out, I can stick them on immediately and play music I like to prevent myself from letting the anger well up. I realise if I let 'noise' anger me, I am being manipulated by it. Now... I switch it out as soon as the noise starts.

As the video states, you can't control others or the environment; you can only be in charge of your own inner peace.

To cut a long story short...calming music and the park are good for my inner stillness.

Music is a blessing in those kind of environments June. I spend most of time with some kind of music on in the background or on headphones...

And the kind of music makes a big difference. I belong to some sites that are focused on spiritual well being, and at first I would get quite annoyed with the soothing music that automatically started up when the page loaded. I'm a rocker, and soothing music just didn't get it for me ... or I just didn't get it.

Listening to the rock that's popular today is a good way to get myself worked up and into a state of anxiety, frustration and even unrealistic anger at times! I love the messages the younger generation are putting into their songs, for the most part ... they are important and need to be heard ... and there is a lot of humor in them, as well. But I realize what they do to my state of mind with overexposure, so now I vary the music I listen to. I'm a lot more flexible and able to consciously choose what I listen to, and when I feel myself taking on a bad attitude, all I have to do is change the channel. What a concept - (d'uh)

Must admit I can't stand rock or fast music. I prefer relaxation music, classical and easy listening. Its a pity the folks with loud music playing haven't heard of ear-phones. Huh?

To write for example its important to have peace and quiet..for me. But I once knew a guy, when I was a student years ago, and he preferred to sit in the student lounge with the TV on and hold conversations whilst writing his assignments.

Different strokes.
